This week-long trip turned into another packed agenda—exactly the kind I’ve come to expect here. Between handling documents, tackling a small apartment renovation, cleaning up the space, sightseeing, and reconnecting with relatives, every day felt full but meaningful. Moldova has a way of blending the practical with the memorable. Oh, and the food, the food deserves it’s own post, it’s so good!

Cricova

One of the highlights was visiting Cricova Winery. The underground tunnels stretch for an astonishing 120 kilometers, forming a subterranean city dedicated entirely to wine and sparkling wine. Riding through the cool (13C or 55F) corridors, passing endless rows of bottles and barrels aging quietly in the dark, you get a sense of how deeply wine is woven into Moldova’s identity. It’s impressive and atmospheric. Only one other winery in Moldova has a similar experience – Milestii Mici.

Orheiul Vechi

Another standout was Orheiul Vechi, an ancient monastery perched high on a hill overlooking a winding river. The climb up is rewarded with sweeping views of the valley—rugged cliffs, green slopes, and the quiet curve of water below. The day was hot, the kind of heat that slows your steps, but the scenery made every moment worth it.

Driving there, the countryside opened up into wide fields, and at one point we passed a stretch of sunflowers glowing in the sun — I had to stop and take some pictures.

Between family visits, errands, and exploring Moldova’s cultural landmarks, the trip felt like a blend of everyday life and unexpected beauty.
